When people complain about other people who buy cars that they don't "need." Which usually around these parts (or enthusiast sites/blogs in general) are people complaining about people buying SUVs.

Kinja'd!!!

Yes, these people don't need these big, expensive, body-on-frame trucks, but they want them. It's just the same as people wanting a Corvette or Miata. They don't need sporty 2-doors, but they want them. If we all didn't want or buy something more than we needed, we'd all be driving Malibus or Camrys around, and what fun would that be?

So let the people in their SUVs enjoy them, and you enjoy your sporty hatchback or whatever you drive. If they're happy and you're happy, who cares what they're driving?

Kinja'd!!!

Unless they cut you off without a blinker while on the phone, then give the hell. A lot of it.

Sometimes "don't need" is used as an euphemism for "are making up for their insecurities and societal issues with". This is one of the cases.

I'm with you. I don't NEED a pickup truck, but my next vehicle will probably be a Canyon.

I tow once a year so I don't need a full size pickup.

It gets 1 less MPG than my 07 Milan and has the ability to tow that 1 time a year, and it has 4x4.

win all around

Part of the reason people get upset is when they see waste. A lot of waste. All the gas wasted by driving around 6,000lb when you could be driving around 3,500 lb affects all of us indirectly (actually, directly). The safety complainers come out when somebody driving a small car was killed by somebody driving an SUV, etc.

I'm not one of those complainers, BTW, I have a '73 Buick and until just recently always had a truck of some kind. However, now I use electricity and a teeny tiny bit of gas instead of driving a hog getting 11 MPG. The gas money wasn't killing me, I could afford it, but the associated waste never made me happy. I don't DD my '73 LeSabre (although I used to , and it gets a lot better MPG than the 11 MPG trucks I had), so it's gas use although poor is negligible.

I try to convince car-shopping people who value my opinion that they want to buy a good mid-size/large car instead of a minivan/SUV because better handling, tire wear, brake wear, fuel consumption etc. But if they want the big thing than you are absolutely, right, that's what they want. My wife and I both don't like minivans, she has a Passat Wagon as DD and I have my Volt to DD, both small cars. If we need to move a lot of people it takes less gas for us to take both cars than to drive my old Yukon anywhere. If I need to tow my trailer I bring out the old Buick...

I don't NEED a Trailblazer or any other SUV I've been looking at, but I like being high off the ground and having available 4-wheel drive for when shit gets a little hairy. Plus on top of that I just like driving big cars since that's all I've ever driven.

They make it impossible for me to see more than a few meters in front, as they take up the entirety of my windscreen if I'm less than 100 meters behind them in my normal-sized car.

They will likely kill me if they crash me in their 3-ton vehicle whose bumper sits about level with my face.

They drive like they own the road, since their vehicle is massive and can just "intimidate" you to get out of your lane.

They make my eyes hurt.

So yeah, I have big problems with SUVs and people who buy them. Fuck them.

I get irritated when some jackball with one child, no pets, and an office job says they "need" a Yukon XL Denali. They'd do just as well in a small sedan.

Someone buying a 5500-pound SUV they don't need and saying they "need" it? Asshole

Someone buying a 5500-pound SUV they don't need and admitting they just wanted it? Acceptable.

I miss the 4x4. I really do.

I went from 2 4x4 blazers in a row (88 2 door s10 and an 04 4 door s10) down to a 07 Mercury Milan FWD V6. Sure it feels like it handles like a RACE CAR in comparison lol but it has no STRENGTH to it. You know what I mean? The Milan has done fine in the snow with good all season tires.

My wife's Commander is nice but it has zero power with the 3.7L V6. I even told her when we test drove it, I could never have it be my primary vehicle, it's way too slow. She loves it though.

I love the look of the Canyon, I must have one. I want to get one in probably 3-4 years, I'll prolly get a good used one then.

By the same token, I have big problems with Camrys, Corrollas and Priuszzzzzzzz.

They are appliances, therefore they attract a certain breed of people. The ones who are sitting 20kph under the limit in the fast lane, and then spped up to prevent you passing. The ones who have so little confidence in themselves that they are a complete and utter hazard on the road. The ones that are so terrified that they cannot move one finger towards the signal stalk. The ones who, in the snow, crawl along at 10kph and make every movement jerky.

Is it a generalization? Yes. There are plenty of people who buy them for the alleged reliability who don't fit this pattern. But your comment is also a generalization. Just be aware of that.

I don't need either of these wastes of money.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Generally, my attitude is let the people drive what they want. If that's what makes them happy, great.

I don't need my 135is to drive to work, but it's fun to apex corners and drive like an ass while listening to the M Performance exhaust make lots of noise.

I don't need my Grand Cherokee's three automatic locking differentials to make it through a 6" snowstorm, but it's nice to have them to REALLY make it through a 6" snowstorm.

So while I do still kinda cringe at folks who say they "need" a full-size SUV or pickup for regular commuter duty, or they "need" a Tahoe because they just had their second kid and heaven forbid they drive a minivan, or that's just what their preference is, I don't really have any ground upon which to stand.

Also, how do these people know SUV drivers *don't* need them?? If they saw my dad get out of his Suburban at Wal-Mart by himself how would they know that he had a wife and 5 sons? With all of us in it, it gets 147 people-miles per gallon which is tough to beat so even the gas guzzler argument falls flat. The moral of the story is, lots of people have big families. Like, lots of people.

I know this isn't the gist of what you're saying, but stop right there. You're correct. You don't need a Trailblazer. NOBODY needs a Trailblazer. They're truly awful vehicles. Everyone I know who's had one has had nothing but issues. And several of these were brought brand new. The ONLY redeeming factor of any Trailblazer is the SS model, and only for the engine. The vehicle wrapped around it is absolute shit.

This. Exactly. Do I need my truck? No. Usually I could what I carry in the trunk of an ordinary car. Snow tires do more than 4x4. Mileage is not good.

But:

I like Pickups. I just do. I like the driving position, and modern GM trucks (don't know about the others, except F150. Was good.) are very nice to drive.

I wanted RWD, V8, and because of that combination in snow, I wanted part-time 4x4 as well. Only comes on trucks.

I don't give a hang about mileage. I go by how long it takes me to use a tank. My commute isn't long=I'm not hurting.

So there.

sometimes you actually get more usable hauling space inside a long wheelbase suburban than a full 4 door truck.

A lot of the 1500/150 trucks are impossible to find in long bed and full 4 door cab. Some people want to be able to haul + carry around lots of people with the same vehicle. Would you say it's more practical to buy an actual truck AND a minivan? Most can't afford 2

I would point you in the Clarkson direction, so I'm stealing his analogy.

It would be like clomping around in ski boots all year long because you take a vacation every year to Steamboat Springs.

This is why I didn't start by buying a new F-150. I bought a 20 year old F-150 that only gets used for Home Depot and towing the car, and cost a hell of a lot less. And then for everything else, I have something more reasonable (A Mini).

But if you *want* to clomp around in ski boots all year, that's fine. But don't get surprised when some people do question your judgement.

Not on the SUV. The Ski Boots.

As a for instance, my Mother's 2003 (?) has 70k on it. It's been through three AC compressors, the whole front end (suspension) has been rebuilt twice, the rear wiper works when it wants to (as does 4wd), and the transmission only shifts when it's warm.

Another one bought from the same dealer at the same time (stepfather's business partner) had lost its 4wd and had front end rebuilt before he got rid of it with 40k on it.

Could it be a bad batch, sure. I'd like to think there's a reason that they (GM) decided to name the vehicle that proceeded it completely different. And that reason is people associated that vehicle (and the 72 other rebadged variants) as having a deservedly bad reputation.

Here's what everyone hates to hear about why people buy large SUVs... they actually DO make life easier on parents, especially those that are upgrading from sedans or hatches. You absolutely can make a smaller car work for your needs, but many people enjoy having the extra room and utility that comes with a larger vehicle. Want to tow? Get a pickup. Want to haul? Get a van, man.

A lot of the 1500/150 trucks are impossible to find in long bed and full 4 door cab.

I don't think Ford/GM/Chrysler sell a 1/2 ton with a crew cab and 8 foot bed (Normally it's limited to regular cab + 8ft box or crew cab + 6.5ft box. If you do the extended cab, you might be able to do an 8ft box in a 1/2 ton). If you want that, they have wonderful HD pickups that you can buy for a lot more money...

I've made this point many times on this site. Its 100% hypocritical to critique people for owning a SUV if you are a fan of sports cars. They are both specialized cars for specialized duties that often don't get used to their full potential. Drive what makes you happy and welcome the fact that in the US, we can for the most part, drive whatever the hell we want.

I agree it gets a bad rap, and I obviously realize that there has to be some basis for the claim, but even taking into account the fact that bad news spreads faster, I just don't get the division on this car (not poking at you here). Some people are adamant that they have never had a problem, others (who are numerous enough that I would say they couldn't ALL have lemons) who claim it as the most unreliable car ever.

Thank you!

My Grandpa has probably never said he "Needs" his Mazda CX-9 but if he knew how to get on Oppo he'd probably see the flak the CX9 gets.

The Mazda 5 is small. The CX9 looks a million times better and its just and overall nicer vehicle. We needed a 7 seater, but most people in my family hates the looks of Minivans and how they drive. My Mom used to own a dodge caravan and after that she said she is never buying another Minivan, she despises them.

It's personal prefrence, its why articles like the "just buy the damn minivan" bother me. Even if an SUV isn't any less soccer-mom than a Minivan, it's still more luxurious, bigger and usually have better styling.

Also, in my opinion the 7 seater CX-9 is too small for my Grandpa, he needs something like a Suburban or Yukon XL for what he puts in it. If there was a 7 seater pickup truck, it would be his vehicle.

Yeah but those aren't practical for family life. Yes I know they come in formats for lots of seating but it's really only a commercial vehicle. It doesn't come with amenities a modern family would want. And I hedged my bet on the long bed and said they're impossible to find because I was pretty sure it wasn't available but didn't feel like doing the research.

A modern full size SUV gives you the comfy seats for the kids, entertainment features to keep them quiet and can tow and haul. No it can't haul inside as much as the full size Transit van, but it's more practical for a multipurpose application.

I totally get this question. One thing I'd point out is posers. For example big bro trucks that are lifted to the sky with mudder tire etc that have never seen so much as a puddle. On the same token you could have a Lamborghini that never sees anything faster than 55mph. Having a excessive car is ok with me if it's used appropriately.

One other thing, I just don't see the appeal of driving a big diesel truck.

Much noise, little move, so sad.

It's a nice truck overall though. It feels firmly planted, which is a huge upgrade from her bubble 1st Gen Jeep Liberty (which had the same god damn 3.7L in it), the interior is great because mainly I don't expect a Commander to have the soft touch dash of a freaking Bentley (...some people....) Seats are nice for even long rides, and we've had 6 foot tall people sit in the backseat with great leg and head room, I didn't even have to move my seat up.

I'd prefer one of the V8's with the better 4x4 though.

There's a black Commander with a Hemi that a teacher here drives, I really love how they look. The soft touch dash is surprising, but a lot of Chrysler products I've ridden in have really comfy seats.

Oh yeah, and it looks SO MUCH BETTER than the Durango of the same time.

I tend to find sports car drivers to be more aware of their cars than certain types of SUV drivers. When you drive a lowered car whose roof doesn't come up to certian SUV beltlines, it makes a big difference as to which I'd rather be around.

I'm with you 100% I used to daily drive a Dodge Challenger SRT8 and I could afford the gas but one day it struck me.

I was like "I'm so fucking stupid. I'm driving with the cruise on @ 65mpg to and from work everyday and I'm using about 50hp of the 425hp available. What's the point? I could easily do the same thing in a 100hp Fiat 500." 2 months later I sold the Challenger and I bought a 2013 Ford Fusion 1.6L and now I'm enjoying my 35+mpgs.

Yes I could of got a Fiat 500 but I'm trying to start a family so it wouldn't work for us a year from now but I still feel like I made a sensible choice and I'm doing my part for a better tomorrow.

My next car will be a Tesla Model 3

It's going good. Much more refined than my WJ. The seats were my favorite thing about the WJ. The WK seats aren't as plush but they are nicely supportive and have some give to them, almost like memory foam. The ride is better damped but has just enough float in it to still feel cushy. Way quieter and smoother to drive, better handling and braking, way more power. And the seat heaters actually work, unlike the ones in my WJ.

As for the tires, I kept the Goodyear Fortera HLs on it since they had plenty of tread left, but worked the price to where I was happy with it. I read a bunch more reviews on the Forteras and there's a fair number of people who seem happy with the winter traction. Most of the complaints are about shitty tread life.

We haven't really gotten enough snow for me to see how they work yet. If they suck, I've got cash to spare for new tires. But I figure might as well not spend more money yet if I don't have to.

Daimler would disagree with you. At least because one can now order a Sprinter with prep work for rear seat entertainment and still haul more kid stuff than a Burban.

Oh, they now build 'em with a two speed transfer case.

The reason SUVs are popular with families is the classic "I do NOT want to drive a *%R$*@! minivan" syndrome. Which is fine. I can understand that. However...

The problem I have is that a full-size Burban costs $50K base, and if you want the rear seat DVD, you go to a LT model, which with 4WD, starts at $57,650. Well equipped at $64,100 or so (with rear seat DVD, Satnav, sunroof, etc).

Say what? And you only get seating for 7 with the second row buckets?

A Sprinter 12 seat passenger van with a decent smattering of goodies is mid $50K, and that means you still have $10K or so on outfitting the van with all the TVs and DVD players and game consoles your kids could desire (and Satnav and SiriusXM for Mom and Dad).

About the only thing the Sprinter won't compete with the Burban is on towing. 5000 lbs rated isn't a slouch, though. So unless you have a boat to tow with you already, and that's over two tons, you are likely getting more car for your money with the Sprinter over the Burban.

But if you *want* the Burban because rabblerabbleminivansrabblerabble, fine. Or if you plan to make a Frankenburban.

Same here. I was selling cars for a while in a pretty up-and-coming suburban area and whenever the young professional couples were expecting their first baby they'd stroll into the dealership saying "We're expecting our first child so we NEED an SUV with a 3rd row, and we also NEED leather seats and NEED a DVD player." Never mind the fact that they'd trade the damn thing back in before the kid was old enough to know what a DVD was.

Agreed, nothing wrong with saying you want those things. Need is a different story.

You know what's hysterical about that?

Mercury used to be the choice for Canada. They sold F-100's rebadged as Mercury's there. I hope to import one to the US one day, because well, I'm the crazy Mercury guy.

ALSO crazy they even sold Mercury in the Middle East. Full line up until they shut it down.

Well, one of my big arguing points is exactly towing.

I can't even tell you how popular campers are here in Michigan. And if you want a bigger camper but also have 3 or more kids you're going to want a 3rd row vehicle and that means you can't get a 5th wheel pickup set up so you've got a big ass heavy trailer hooked to a normal class IV trailer hitch.

I tow a camper once a year so I don't necessarily NEED towing capability. But I know a lot of people that tow really frequently as well as wanting the room inside for kids, gear, home depot runs.

And they don't look like hell. Sorry these new point nose full size vans look simply horrendous to me (by any and all brands, I'm a diehard big 3 guy and Nissan is the best looking one because it's got more of a truck grille).

Personally (and for the record) the one time I had a minivan as a rental I thought it rode great and was plenty fine to drive.

I just don't like how people act like they're the safest cars on the road. They are to the driver, but to everyone else they are a danger due to their height. And when people say they're more practical, I mean perhaps, but my car has more space than my Dad's Ford Edge (but this is more about BOF SUVs so it's not the same.) I don't like that SUVs and Crossovers are really the only option in the US though, wagons are largely unavailable and when they are, they're too expensive. I don't so much have a problem with BOF SUVs, as they are tremendously capable. But when sorority girls are texting while driving while driving a car that could run over my windshield or kill me multiple times on my bike, I get really tired of them. But at the end of the day, it's the drivers I don't like, not the car. A Suburban is my guilty pleasure car, and I would drive a Range Rover 10/10. And with the increased efficiency of SUVs now, I'm getting happier for the future. I mean, the new 'Burb gets the same fuel economy as my Bolbo.
